Money Saving Tips and Tricks

Since we recently discussed the actual process of painting your home, we figured today we would talk about how to prepare for the job itself. With a little preparation and some planning, you can cut costs and save time when painting the exterior of your home.

Repairing and repainting the outside of your home is imperative. It’s one of the most important things you can do as a homeowner to protect your home from the elements. As soon as you notice weather damage, cracking or chipping you should either call the professional house painters at Pristine Painting, or plan on making the repairs yourself. If you choose to go it alone, be sure to keep these tips in mind:

Pick Your Paint: With the abundance of color choices available these days, it can be hard to choose a paint. Most manufacturers offer good, better and best paints, but it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference. In order to avoid spending unnecessary money follow this simple plan. First, gauge the amount of paint you’ll need by measuring the area you wish to paint. Next, set a budget for yourself. Now, when you go to the store, you will have already narrowed the selection of paint that you have to choose from. This makes the final decision that much easier.

Prep Work

Prepping your surface might seem boring and unnecessary, but it can actually save you loads of time and money in the long run. Be sure to thoroughly clean the exterior of your home first. Then check for any loose nails or holes, fill the holes with putty and pound in the nails. Next, sand away any loose or flaking paint. Finally, prime any bare wooden areas before doing exterior painting.

Tools

People like to ask us, “Should I use a roller or a brush?” The answer? Both! Both of these tools are very valuable for any painting job. Use the roller to fill in the large open areas, and the brush to delicately paint the smaller areas.

Start at the Top

Painting your home is one of the few things in life where you get to start at the top, so do it! Starting at the top and working your way down will help prevent you from leaning into your freshly applied paint and ruining all of your hard work!

If you still have questions or concerns about house painting, just call the expert residential painters at Pristine Painting and Decorating.

Painting Lombard IL Kitchen

It’s no secret that kitchens are often the most used room in a house. They are the places where families come together to talk, holidays and birthdays are celebrated, and meals are prepared. They often provide a gateway to the rest of the home, and are the main room in which families relax after a long day. The kitchen is the heart of the modern home.

So, it’s not shocking that remodeling or redesigning your kitchen is a major undertaking. Putting in the time and effort to thoughtfully design every facet of what is, in reality, a fairly complex room can require a great deal of energy. Luckily there’s one simple way to liven up your kitchen without a great deal of work: a new paint job.

Painting Contractors In Montgomery Illinois Answer Your Questions

Painting contractors in Montgomery IL can answer most of your question about house painting. For instance, can you use paint after it has frozen? How do I clean my brushes and rollers? Keep reading to find out!

Think of the warehouses that painting contractors have, and the paints stored in them. Then, think about heating and cooling? Do you think those warehouses are heated and air conditioned? Chances are, they are not, and yet the paint is still good. So, is it ok to use paint after it has frozen? The answer is yes, if it doesn’t stink. Paint can go bad after a while, so if it has a foul odor, you’ll have to dispose of it. Also, if the paint is lumpy after it thaws out, it won’t be of much use. You’ll have to get new paint for your job.

Many people wonder just how long their partial cans of paint will last. This is quite common, with people holding on to ½ gallon of trim paint in case repairs need to be done. If paint is properly sealed and stored, it will last for about 2 years. The best place to store your paint is somewhere where it won’t be exposed to extremes of heat and cold, which can shorten the life-span of the paint.

Do you know how to clean your brushes and rollers? Soap and water works great on latex paint, and turpentine or paint thinner will clean up after oil paints.

Pristine Painting and Decorating are the painting contractors of choice in Montgomery IL.

Painters In Dupage County And Painting Cabinets, Part 3

This is the third in a series of how painters in Dupage County can paint your kitchen cabinets and make them look brand new. In the other articles, we talked about how to remove the doors and drawers properly to keep them from getting mixed up. Now, we’ll talk about the prep work necessary for a good paint job.

Holes

Yes, there will be holes. If you are installing new hardware, there will be even more holes! Even reusing your old hardware, such as hinges and pulls, will mean repositioning some of the hardware. However, if you’re reusing your hardware, you won’t have to fill and sand all of the holes.

To prepare your cabinets, doors, and drawers for receiving paint, you need to fill all of the old holes from screws. This will probably number in the hundreds. It’s really very simple – you get a small putty knife and a small tub of wood filler. If you’re going over your cabinets with a stain, you can even get wood filler that will match your stain. Either way, it will absorb some of the color, anyway.

Gently press the putty knife edge into the tub of filler, then press the filler into the hole in the wood. Drag the knife across the spot to remove the excess, and you’re done! Except for sanding. Don’t dig the putty knife into the wood, or you’ll just end up using more filler to fix the dent.

Caulking

This is a very fine point, but painters who know their stuff really care about this. If there is trim around your cabinet doors, run a really thin line of caulk around the seam. Run your finger down the caulk to smooth and even it. Now, do the same thing to the joint where your cabinets and crown molding or ceiling meet. You’re not trying to level out the angle of the seam – you’re just sealing it. When you paint, the paint will flow smoothly along those joints, without buildup, and without voids.

Sand and Prime

Finally, sand everything. You may even have to use a cleaner to get greasy buildup off of the cabinet doors. But, if you’ll give a fine “tooth” to the existing paint or to the varnished surface of the wood, the primer and paint will stick great.

Dupage County Painters And Kitchen Cabinet Redo, Part 2

In a previous article, Dupage County, IL painters advised you to remove the cabinet doors in your kitchen before you paint your cabinets. Here, you’re going to find out how to remove those doors correctly.

Mark Your Doors and Drawers

Unless you want to redrill literally hundreds of holes in your cabinet carcasses and doors, you need to mark your doors and their location. You actually need to do this even if you’re installing new hinges and pulls, too.

Choose a letter, such as “K” for “kitchen”. You’re going to number each door and drawer in your kitchen, and the hole it covers. Start at, say, the upper right hand corner of your kitchen and put a piece of painters’ tape on the inside of the door. Number it “K1”. Put another piece of painters’ tape inside the carcass, and number it “K1”. That’s all you have to do! Just do it for every door, opening, and drawer in the kitchen. Proceed in a clockwise direction around the kitchen, marking and removing the doors and drawers on the upper cabinets, then for the lower. You’ll be amazed at how many doors there are!

Removing the Doors

When you remove the doors from the cabinet face, unscrew the hinges at the cabinet, leaving the hinges on the doors. This is really important if you’re reusing your hinges. If not, don’t worry about it.

Why?

The whole reason for roadmapping your doors, drawers, and hinges is that they fit where they are. If you have a couple of drawers that stick, switch them – it could be that they were switched at one time before. These doors, drawers, and even hinges have learned to hang and set in their own little spot, and you’ll save yourself a world of hurt if you’ll let them go back to their own home after their facelift.
