Dupage County Painters And Kitchen Cabinet Redo, Part 2

In a previous article, Dupage County, IL painters advised you to remove the cabinet doors in your kitchen before you paint your cabinets. Here, you’re going to find out how to remove those doors correctly.

Mark Your Doors and Drawers

Unless you want to redrill literally hundreds of holes in your cabinet carcasses and doors, you need to mark your doors and their location. You actually need to do this even if you’re installing new hinges and pulls, too.

Choose a letter, such as “K” for “kitchen”. You’re going to number each door and drawer in your kitchen, and the hole it covers. Start at, say, the upper right hand corner of your kitchen and put a piece of painters’ tape on the inside of the door. Number it “K1”. Put another piece of painters’ tape inside the carcass, and number it “K1”. That’s all you have to do! Just do it for every door, opening, and drawer in the kitchen. Proceed in a clockwise direction around the kitchen, marking and removing the doors and drawers on the upper cabinets, then for the lower. You’ll be amazed at how many doors there are!

Removing the Doors

When you remove the doors from the cabinet face, unscrew the hinges at the cabinet, leaving the hinges on the doors. This is really important if you’re reusing your hinges. If not, don’t worry about it.

Why?

The whole reason for roadmapping your doors, drawers, and hinges is that they fit where they are. If you have a couple of drawers that stick, switch them – it could be that they were switched at one time before. These doors, drawers, and even hinges have learned to hang and set in their own little spot, and you’ll save yourself a world of hurt if you’ll let them go back to their own home after their facelift.
