Painting Contractors Can Help Your Basement Floor
Finishing your basement floor does not have to be a strenuous ordeal, especially if you hire professional painting contractors to do it. Many people in the Dupage County, IL area don’t want carpet or even hardwood in their basements because of moisture concerns. Yet, the idea of leaving bare concrete in the space really doesn’t appeal to them. This is where your painting contractor comes in handy.
A skilled painter can come in and apply an epoxy sealant to your basement floor that will hold up to just about every kind of traffic. While some areas of a concrete floor may do just fine with concrete paint, you really need to go with something stronger in high traffic areas. Most basements are used as recreation areas, which means they see a lot of foot traffic as well as food and drink spills. Proper preparation of the floor, and application of epoxy paint, can give you a beautiful basement floor for years to come.
Your painter will come in, first, and clean and prep your concrete basement floor. This will involve using a bonding agent and patch in divots. Divots occur when you pull up carpet tacking strips. The nails come out of the concrete, and pop a cone of concrete out of the floor. In some cases, if the work you’re doing in the basement is more extensive, you may plan on covering these divots with framing for the wall. This is common on complete remodels of a basement, in which water damage has necessitated the removal of even the stud walls. Chips and cracks in the floor may also require filling.
Next, the floor will need to be thoroughly cleaned. Sometimes, this is done with an acid etch, that will give the floor some “tooth” to grip the paint. However, this isn’t always necessary. It is, however, to remove all signs of latex or oil based paint from the floor, if the epoxy is to stick.
Once the floor is properly prepped, the epoxy is mixed. Epoxy paint is in two parts – the colorant and the setting medium. The epoxy your painter uses may be self-priming, but after proper preparation, priming may not be necessary. Your painting contractor will mix the paint one batch at a time, because it begins to harden in about 15 minutes. At this point, the epoxy goes onto the floor with either a roller or a squeegee. It doesn’t take long to dry, and it may take 2 coats. However, once the epoxy sets, it is extremely hard. It will probably have a high gloss finish that will last. Some epoxys have a sealant that protects the finish even further.
Your contractor may be able to put non-skid additive, which will be invisible to view, or add sprinkles to give depth and definition to your new floor.
