Dupage County Painters
Finding Dupage County painters doesn’t have to be a hopeless or overwhelming task. When you know what you’re looking for, it becomes relatively easy. Here, you’ll discover some of the reasons some Dupage County painters’ paint jobs last longer than others.
Durability
Have you ever noticed 4 or 5 year old paint peeling and blistering off of the soffits of your house? To rub it in, the neighbor’s house which was painted – who knows when – still looks great! Why is that?
Well, house painters know that the durability of your paint job is dependent on two things: prep work and quality paint.
Prep Work
Probably the best guide as to what kind of paint your painting contractor should use on your house is to find out what is already on it. If your house is painted with latex paint, extensive prep work will be required to cover it with oil based paint. The contrary is true, as well. Oil based paint won’t stick to latex.
If you have cedar shake siding that appears natural, chances are it has been treated with some kind of sealer. That sealer will also be either oil or water based. Find out which before you re-treat the wood, or paint over it.
The surface that is going to be painted must be clean and dry. While latex paint may be applied over slightly damp surfaces, a wet surface will cause any paint to slide off and bubble. Any loose paint must be scraped off. If paint is not loose, it should not be any problem. However, if you’re painting inside the house, the old paint should be lightly sanded to give it “tooth” for the new paint to stick to. In outdoor applications, weathering has supplied this “tooth”. Of course, if any sanding is done indoors, care should be taken to remove the dust created so that the surface is clean.
Your painting contractor will also prime the surfaces. This is only necessary on areas that have been stripped bare of paint. Surfaces that still have paint on them won’t need priming, because the existing paint serves as a primer.
Quality of Paint
The quality of the paint your painting contractor uses will also determine the longevity of the paint job. The acrylic binders in latex paints, and the mineral oil in oil based paints, are expensive, and cheaper paints will have less of the necessary binders. Binders keep the color from fading as badly, and make the paint job more durable. There is a very real connection between the price of paint and its quality. Cheap paint will have fillers in it, and inferior ingredients.
The performance of superior paint will be evident. It is easier to apply, without being runny or drippy. It has its own leveling properties. In the long run, the quality paint will retain its color and cure without fault. The cost of a paint job is well worth the cost of quality paint.
