4 Rules for Painting Your Chicago Home
At some point in every homeowner’s life there will come a time where they realize they must paint the outside of their house. Perhaps they’ve noticed some weather damage, or maybe peeling paint. Maybe it’s just time for a new color, or a change of pace. Whatever the reason, painting your home is one of the most significant undertakings you will ever face.
That’s why many people choose to hire professionals – like the ones at Pristine Painting and Decorating – to do the hard work for them. However, for those individuals who are dead set on doing the work themselves, we’d like to offer a few tips.
Avoid the Rain: Rain can ruin all of your hard work in a flash. Before you start painting, be sure to check the weather report and avoid the rain. Indoors you have the protection of walls, a ceiling and an HVAC system. Outdoors you are left at the mercy of the elements. One good rule of thumb is this: never paint outside if you wouldn’t also hang your laundry out to dry at the same time.
Humidity is Harsh: Just like rain, humidity can ruin a perfect paint job in no time. Hot weather causes increases in humidity that can prevent paint from sticking and drying properly. If you must paint in the heat, try and start early or later in the day to avoid the hottest hours.
Avoiding the Sun: Sunlight might make your new coat of paint look beautiful, but it won’t stay that way for long. The bright hot sun can cause serious problems with fresh paint. Avoid painting directly in bright sunlight, and if you must paint in the sun try and stay within the shadows until the sun eases up a bit.
Caustic Cold: Just as you should avoid the heat and the sun, you should also avoid the cold. Most paint is fairly cold resistant, but if extremely cold temperatures below 25F are expected, just go ahead and wait for another day. Cold will ensure that paint does not dry, and often leads to flaking and cracking.
