House Painters Can Preserve Your Deck And Patio

Your deck and patio may be the center of your home entertainment, but can they stand up to the abuse they receive? Skillful Illinois house painters can see to it that both deck and patio are prepared for anything that your guests or Illinois weather can throw at them.

Just like everything else in your life, decks and patios have to be kept clean. The good news is that you don’t have to clean them as often as you clean your house. The bad news is, you probably need a power sprayer to do the job.

Now, you can purchase a power sprayer yourself, and store it for 363 days a year. The other two, you’ll actually be using the power sprayer. Or, you can hire painting contractors to come in and do a thorough job of cleaning and preserving your outdoor areas.

Power sprayers are necessary to scrub the surfaces thoroughly. Your deck and patio will get all kind of stuff in the seams, cracks, and surfaces. Moss and algae, for instance, may look picturesque at first, but quickly become a hazard to anyone who may step on the spots and slide around. Not only are they dangerous for foot traffic, they can cause the surface to deteriorate. Mosses and algae have tiny roots that can scar and damage the surface to which they are attached.

A good power wash will also blast the dirt out of the grains of your wooden decks, leaving the wood to “breathe” again and brightening the color. But, the appearance is not the only benefit to cleaning your outdoor surfaces.

If your deck and patio are not clean, the sealants you apply will not stick to them. While flagstone is intended to withstand the pummeling of weather, you won’t have such good luck with your wooden deck. If your deck is natural wood, it will need to be cleaned at least once a year, preferably twice. Then, about every 2 years, you’ll need to have it sealed or refinished. This is true, by the way, of any wood siding you have, too. The sealant will penetrate the wood and close up the wood grain to moisture absorption. Moisture is the number one enemy of wood, and will cause it to warp, crown, cup, and split. You can avoid all of this with regular sealing of your wooden deck or patio. Refinishing may need to be done every 5 to 8 years. With refinishing, the painting contractor will come in and sand off all of the old stain, sealant, or paint that has begun to crackle, and reapply the proper sealant. This will preserve your deck for years.
